Illustrator opacity masks? help!!!?

i get how to make an opacity mask on illustrator but whenever i try to move the mask, the object i'm masking disappears after i move the mask off of the picture. also, whenever i want to move the object i'm masking it wont move, or let me select it at all. is there any way to fix this? is it supposed to do that?
