Laptop isn't working. Screen problems?

So I have a really rubbish laptop. The screen is broken so what I did was connected my laptop to an old tv screen we had. It was working fine and then all of a sudden it stops showing my laptop picture. When I turn it on it shows the start up part where it loads and as soon as it gets on to select user the tv screen goes completely blue :(
